Gnome Screenshot

An excellent solution is the Gnome Screenshot applet. This is run when with Desktop$\rightarrow$Take Screenshot. It can also be run from the command line to capture the window with current focus (after a 5 second delay) with:

  $ gnome-panel-screenshot --window --delay 5

You will be asked to specify a file into which the screenshot is saved.

Under Gnome's Keyboard shortcuts the Print key will take a screenshot and Alt-Print will take a windowshot.
