Debian GNU/Linux will find your CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD drives without the need for you to do anything. For older versions of Debian GNU/Linux see Section 14.1.
The simplest way to burn a CD is with the Naultilus CD Creator described in Section 65.3. It is a basic burner to just do the job without any fuss. An excellent alternative which provides more control, as well as burning Audio CDs, is GnomeBaker which provides a very easy to use intuitive interface to access your burner and build disk images to burn. Another respectable, but more complex, alternative is xcdroast.
An excellent and easy to use command line alternative is burn.
For making backups of DVDs and creating other Video formats see Chapter 28.2.
